Hemorrhagic Cysts

An ovarian cyst is a collection of fluid within the ovary that is surrounded by a thin wall. Many types of ovarian cysts exist, and many do not exhibit any symptoms. Ovarian cysts can be small or large in size but usually range from pea-sized to grapefruit-sized.

Most ovarian cysts, about 95 percent, are harmless and benign. They can occur in women of any age but most often affect women who are in their childbearing years. Some ovarian cysts can rupture, bleed or cause pain and may need to be removed through surgery.

One common type of ovarian cyst is the hemorrhagic cyst. Hemorrhagic cysts are also known as blood cysts, hematoceles and hematocysts. Hemorrhagic cysts occur when a blood vessel in the wall of a cyst breaks, causing blood to enter into the cyst.

Hemorrhagic cysts are a type of functional cyst, meaning that they occur normally during the course of the female menstruation process. Functional cysts, also known as simple cysts, have nothing to do with disease. They can be treated normally and often resolve themselves without the need for treatment or any type of surgery.

Hemorrhagic Ovarian Cyst Symptoms

Generally, hemorrhagic cysts will cause abdominal pain, usually just on one side of they body and they may also cause bleeding and the rapid stretching of the wall of the ovary, which will also cause pain. Blood clots will generally form in the ovary and can be seen using a sonogram.

Hemorrhagic cysts can sometimes rupture and release blood into the abdominal region. This will cause severe pain for the woman, but rupturing hemorrhagic cysts are far less common. Most often, hemorrhagic cysts will regulate themselves. They may, however, require surgical removal. In some cases, even hemorrhagic cysts that rupture can resolve themselves without the need for surgery.

For minor pain and symptoms of hemorrhagic cysts or other types of ovarian cysts, medication or pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can be prescribed. Narcotics and prescription pain medications may also be prescribed by a medical professional.

Heating pads, hot water bottles and ice packs can also be helpful for hemorrhagic cyst symptoms and can release tension and stimulate circulation, as can certain herbal teas, vitamin supplements and avoiding caffeine.

Women who have hemorrhagic cysts or any type of ovarian cyst that lasts longer than two or three menstrual cycles and women with a family history of ovarian cancer should speak to a medical professional about their symptoms and treatment options to avoid more serious problems in the future.

Hemorrhagic Cyst Surgery

If surgery does become necessary, doctors will most often use laparoscopy on hemorrhagic cysts. Laparoscopy is minimally invasive and is often referred to as keyhole surgery or pinhole surgery. Laparoscopy uses very small incisions, generally around the belly button area for hemorrhagic cysts, to insert a rod lens and a camera system to perform the surgery.

Laparoscopy leaves less scarring than traditional surgery because of the smaller incisions and there is also less pain, blood loss and recovery time necessary for hemorrhagic cyst patients.

Good luck to all of you. As i read what everyone have written it seems that most of you have one on your left side.. That seems strange to me for some reason. I have one on my right, I go back in 3 weeks for another utra sound. I feel for you all because it is very painful and something we shoudnt have to live with. When i went to the DR {SHE} we very kind. I found out that my thyrod is low, and thought maybe that is why i was having hot flashes.. Now maybe i really understand why i am having them so bad. I am only 40, have had a historctomy,, and about a 10 months ago had surgry to remove scar tissue, while she was in there the Dr had to remove other cyst. so 10 months later i have 4 more cysts and a Hemorrhagic cyst about 5 cin... they grow fast... Everyone just remeber.. God gave us a sence about our bodys, if your Dr isnt listening... YOU TELL THEM. Stand up for what you know your body is saying to you... I will ask to have this removed, as well as my last overy.. I dont want this again... God bless you all.

Oh, and by the way, I was on birth control pills. So, that is not necessarily a cure all.

Another note, I spoke to an expert in Women's Health at the NIH/NICHD. According to her hot flashes are a sure sign of ovarian damage. If you have these along with pain in your ovarian region demand a CT scan or a laparotomy!

Excruciating left abdominal pain
drove me to my OBGYN. She, yes a woman,
dismissed it immediately as "mentstrual pain" as though I had never had a period
before (In spite of the fact that I am in my 30's). After we had
finished the appointment I was on my way out when the pain flared
up. I asked to see the doctor again and when I did I said to her, in a futile effort to be taken seriously, " I am in a
lot of pain, it is in my left side only, I feel nauseous, and it is NOT NORMAL for me!" But amazingly she
dismissed me again as if I knew nothing of my own condition and sent me on my way. One month later with the pain still present, I finally got an ultrasound only to discover that I had
a huge cyst off of my left ovary. The doctor told me over the phone (she refused to see me when I was at the office) that she would just wait another month and then request another ultrasound to see if it 'goes away'.
During the next month I had crazy hot flashes. When I called my doctor's office and asked to speak to a doctor, a nurse returned my call. I told her about my frequent hot flashes. She responded with a platitude about hot flashes being caused by a wide range of things including a change in exercise routine or a change in diet. I responded that I had not changed anything at all. She replied that hot flashes could be caused by anything and that I should not be concerned. I made sure to ask whether or not the 7 cm cyst hanging off of my left ovary could have anything to do with it. Absolutely not, she responded. This she assured me was totally unrelated. Really? , I thought, increduously. Oh well, I thought, maybe I am too paranoid. I was not the expert after all.

Anyway, to get to the point. If this happens to you GET A LAPAROSCOPY right away. I was rushed to the E.R. two weeks later. They refused to give me a laparoscopy and instead performed 3 more inconclusive ultrasounds (my impression was that you really can't tell a whole lot from an ultrasound). After 14 hours of intense pain (the worst of my life) I was finally give a laparoscopy and what do you know my left ovary and fallopian tube were completely black and dead! The cyst had twisted around them several times cutting off the blood supply (the ultrasounds were again TOTALLY useless in determining this). In the end, I lost my ovary. So, lesson - get a CT scan, don't let them rely on the ultrasound on its own, it's pretty inconclusive usually. And if you really think it's serious demand a laparscopy. Better than getting a laparotomy and losing your organs - or suffering the pain for the amount of time that I did. Good luck to you all. And it's true, don't expect doctors to take care of you, you have to demand that they do! Inform your self and demand proper care or you won't get it!

I found out yesterday that i have a hemorrahgic cyst that is about 4 cm on my left ovary. lete me start from the top. i have had five surgeries 2 life threatening the efirst one brought on by a perferation that caused me to bleed into my abdomen and during surgery i actually died and was revived. and 3 less complicated, in the last year and a half, totally unrelated to my reproductive system. my last surgery, a small one was just less than a month ago. each and every surgery has had complications, so you may well realize that pain and i are almost friends, i deal well with it, have a lot of scar tissue that is strangling nerves, I'm waiting for another surgery to handle that. i know pain. now, last month i got my period right on time, like i have for the last 30 years ( i am 41) by the third day i can usually count on things to slow down, they didn't. i countinued to bleed, after 2 1/2 weeks passed, i went to see my dr. he thought, with all my surgeries maybe menopause was brought on. first we did blood work. there were other problems with my blood work so we took care of them. then after 4 weeks of bleeding we did more blood work. it was not menopause....so why was i bleeding and having terrible hot flashes and many other symptoms of menopause? I don't know let's do a sonogram, this was last friday. the tech sent me home without a word. today, i saw my dr again, he told me about the cyst and asked me if i had gotten to see and OB-GYN. i said, i had been trying for a week but they best i could find was nov. 3rd. he said, tell them about the cyst and a couple other results from the blood work, if that doesn't work, call me, i'll get you in. that was today. now. the vaginal bleeding stopped on Sunday and started again on wednesday. I don't know how to feel. i've had so many x-rays, sonograms, CT scans, MRI's of my abdomen in the last year and a half and even in the last few months and NOW this shows up, so quickly? and why all the vaginal bleeding? i thought that wasn't a symptom of cysts. i don't know what to think. I have spent 1/3 of the last year and a half in the hospital. i don't know what to think.

I have one on my left ovary. My unbelievably rude doctor told me my only option is birth control pills. He was very insensitive and consequently he wouldn't really answer my questions about other options. Mine measures 4.2x3.7x3.6cm and is filled with blood. I'm having incredible pain that's lasted over a week and is not getting better. At what point do they decide its time to operate? Is it based on size, pain level, time? Mine has been present for several months now and is only getting bigger. I scheduled a 2nd opinion but have to wait 3 weeks.

I have dealt with insensitive physicians before myself. Have you tried to get in with a female? Sometimes they are a little bit better with bedside manner. I suffer from these types of cysts too. I am in pain all the time. Have you considered just "telling" your physician you want surgery, instead of asking? I only say that because I find sometimes I have to be very proactive and very blunt with doctors. I have had the same type of cyst as you for months now. It is growing and the pain is intense. I am calling my GYN Monday, I am simply going to tell him, "I need the surgery". Be your own advocate, don't give up, you are not alone :)

Can you have this kind of cyst on your cervix? I had a very large cyst on my cervix that was discovered in March during a routine exam and was confirmed again this september. I was told it was nothing to worry about, but as I started my cycle this month I experienced extreme abdominal pain and my bleeding is much heavier than usual. I'm going to get checked out once the bleeding stops (or if it doesn't) and see if the cyst is still there and try to figure out if this will affect my ability in the future to have kids. I'd rather not mess around with my reproductive health.

These comments have helped me understand what I am going thru now with a hemorrhagic cyst in one of my ovaries. I've also had a partial hysterectomy, so its a little more scary to think that maybe the ovary is not functioning properly?
Posted by Crystal
I had a hysterectomy about a year and a half ago but left my ovaries and at that time the dr drained a hemorrhagic cyst a couple of weeks ago I started to have some pain so they did an ultrasound and found a fairly large cyst(in my opinion not sure on the exact size but it appeared to be almost as big as my ovary) now I need to go in for another ultrasound in a few weeks my question is since this cyst has reoccured is this something that will require surgery?

I have one (4.8cm) on my right ovary, and I happen to start my manopause so I haven't had period for 3 months so far. Anybody has similar situation to share with me? I will have another ultra-sound exam next month.
Posted by Stacy
I had sent a response two days ago, but not sure it posted. I am in EXACTLY the same situation. Cyst found in mid-september, I haven't had a period since (also just starting menopause), was told to wait 3 months to see if my period comes, but am very reluctant to wait. Did your dr. just tell you to schedule another ultrasound?

I just got home today from having surgery on this type of cyst. Unfortunately, my ovary was a floater so they thought this was a cyst in my intestines. Turns out my ovary floated behind my colon. It was a 4cm cyst actively bleeding causing pain. I guess I am lucky they didn't have to resect my intestines but I wonder if I could have just left it alone to resolve itself. Will know in a few weeks. They only drained it. If it re-occurs, surgeon said they will have to go in and remove the cyst. I am optimistic.

Thanks for responding Amy. Your information does help. I'm a real chicken when it comes to these things as I have never been in surgery before. Thank goodness for modern technology though.
I wish you the best of luck with your baby plans too.
Take care

Hi Lynne,
I've just discovered I've got one on my left ovary. It seems big to me, 3 x 3.6 x 2.4 cm. I'm a bit worried about it as I'm trying for my first baby. My question is about the surgery; What did that involve, was it painful and how long did it take? By the way, I hope you are feeling better now and I hope it will work out for you in a few weeks. It's good to hear that you are optimistc about it all... makes me choose to think the same way!

I had laproscopic surgery yesterday for the removal of a cyst that was full of blood. I have three insisions on my lower abdomen. The first below my belly button and about an inch. The other two are lower and on the left and right sides. They are about the width of my little fingernail. The surgery was about an hour and recovery has been ok. I was up and about and eating that night. I'm still on pain meds, but overall the aurgery wasn't too bad. We are trying for our first baby. When doing this procedure, my doctor also checked my tubes for blockage and for endrometrious as well. Because of the pain, our insurance will cover the procedure even though there are some fertility issues that were checked also. HOpe this helps.

Thank you for this article. I've had many many female problems including endometriosis since I started my period. I've had many cysts. Most have gone away on thier own, I've also had three burst. That was extremely painful. However I had a partial hystorectomy I kept my overies 3 years ago due to the endometriosis, and up until six months ago felt the best I had in years. But six months ago I started getting the dull ache in my pelvis constantly ant the sharp shooting pains. These symptoms have progressivly gotten worse. So I had a CT last week that shows I have an enlarged overy at 5cm and a possible hemorrhagic cyst invloving my left overy measuring 4.4 cm. I will find out today what the dr will do about it. From what I've researched online a normal ovary measures 3cm. I hope my story will help other women, as this article helped me understand the possible hemorrhagic cyst I have. Thnks again.

Hi, Im curious what your doctor had you do. I have hemorrhagic cyst on my left ovary that measures 4.6 cm withmy ovary measring 5cm as well. My dr suggested waiting it out. Ive had a cyst rupture before and the pain is really bad, I am hesitant to not just have it removed. Any advice would be great

This article was very helpful; although, I am also going to keep looking up more information about these types of cysts. I have had ovarian cysts since I started me first menstrual cycles, but I have never had a cyst of this type. So I decided to look it up for my piece of mind! Thank you again!

Thank You your artical was helpful to me. I had an idea as to what fibroid tumors were.
But no idea as to what a hemmorrhgic cyst was. This information was easly understandable. With common treatments if the condition was painful. My Dr. only put in one sentance about it,in a report to me after some tests. So I just had to look it up.
