Ovarian Cyst Symptoms and Diagnosis

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries, the female reproductive organs that produce eggs. Women can develop ovarian cysts as a normal part of their menstrual cycle as the ovaries prepare eggs to release into the fallopian tubes. While many of these cysts are completely benign (not harmful to health), some ovarian cysts can be malignant, meaning they pose a danger to health.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts can develop for a number of reasons and range from being completely harmless to life threatening. Here is an outline of the various types of ovarian cysts:
  • cystadenomas: cysts that develop on the outside of the ovary, causing pain if they are particularly large

  • dermoid cysts: cysts that can also grow hair, teeth and a variety of other tissues, causing pain if they are particularly large

  • functional cysts: cysts filled with eggs that develop during menstruation and disappear once the eggs are released

  • endometriomas: cysts that grow in or outside of the uterus, causing pain if they are particularly large

  • polycystic ovaries: cysts filled with eggs that aren’t released and, instead, continue to grow.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

The type of ovarian cyst you have will determine the symptoms you experience. However, some cases of ovarian cysts are asymptomatic, meaning the cysts exist without causing any noticeable symptoms. In general, the following are common symptoms associated with the presence of ovarian cysts:
  • achiness in the in the back (especially the lower back) and upper legs
  • breast tenderness
  • irregular menstrual cycles
  • nausea and/or vomiting
  • painful sex
  • pressure and/or pain in the abdomen
  • pressure and/or pain on the bladder and/or rectum
  • problems passing urine
  • weight gain.
Keep in mind that the above symptoms of ovarian cysts are fairly generic and may also be associated with the presence of other conditions, such as endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease. As a result, seeing a doctor is important for an official diagnosis of ovarian cysts.

In more serious cases when the ovarian cysts are particularly harmful to your health, symptoms include:
  • dizziness or light-headedness
  • fatigue
  • fever
  • severe abdominal pain
  • shortness of breath and/or rapid breathing
  • vomiting.
If you start experiencing any of the above symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Diagnosing Ovarian Cysts

Because ovarian cysts cause generic, if any, symptoms, most cases of ovarian cysts are diagnosed during a woman’s annual Pap smear. At these routine checkups, your gynecologist feels your ovaries to detect if any swelling exists.

If he identifies inflammation, then he may call for an ultrasound to be performed. The ultrasound points out the shape, size and location of the ovarian cyst. Similarly, ultrasounds can highlight whether the cyst is solid, filled with fluid or composed of some mixed of the two.

Once the cyst has been located, doctors routinely perform blood tests to evaluate whether or not the cyst is cancerous. If the blood test returns with abnormally high amounts of the protein CA-125, the woman likely has some stage of ovarian cancer.

If caught early, treatment options for ovarian cancer (such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery) are more effective. As a result, getting regular gynecological exams is extremely important to early diagnosis and prompt treatment that can save your life.

I went to the doctor like everyone was saying.
He said that I possibley have a diseased ovary, he didn’t tell me what that was so what is it? He said that he may need to take it out. He put me on the Y.A.Z birth control and for about two weeks. But if it was diseased would the birth control even help it?
My period was 4 or 5 days late he said that if I didn’t start my period by Sunday then I needed to call him. I called him Saturday night and told him that I don’t think that I was going to start and that the pain got worse and he told me to take 4 200mg of Ibuprofen every four hrs so is that too much to take? whats the chance of me haveing surgery agin. So about three days later I called him again and told him that the Ibuprofen it was not
Working and he proscribed me something else it was Tortel I think that’s how you spell it.
And isn’t the Ibuprofen for imflamation? Why would I need to take it when I checked me out he said that It wasn’t big or anything. Also he said that if he went back in they would have to take something out he never said what the something was, I think that’s would be my left ovary
Why can’t he do another Laparoscopy?
So I left massage on the phone saying that I just want it out but he called back saying that he wants to wait and see if the birth control works or not. It’s been going on for about 6 months now.
Something along the lines of my age and the risks what are the risks?
I know that it will prob make it hard to have kids and I might have to take supplements everyday I just don’t want this anymore and the pain *****.
I’ve talked to my mom and she said to do what ever I have to do
So can I please get some advice?
Thanks Ju Ju

I am 34 and have had problems with cysts since I was 15. I was on birth control for 15 years to help it. I think the pills did not completely take them away, but controlled the growing as I still got cysts while on the pill. I have a beautiful daughter and the cysts never gave me problems with conceiving. Before I got pregnant I had a leaking cyst and had it removed. Not everyones situation is the same, but if you are like me your cysts will not give you problems with having babies.

My daughter is 11 and had her first ruptured ovarian cyst when she was 9. She does not have her period yet. She is now experiencing vomitting and light headedness in the morning and then is fine a couple of hours later. It happened twice within 10 days of each other. The doctor says to see if it happens again in about a month. If so, she will need to be seen. Has anyone experienced this with their cysts?

It's really scary that women can get ovarian cysts. My grandmother, at one time, had about 3 or 4 of them—all were benign so it didn't bother her TOO bad, but she still had them removed. Poor thing. So sorry you all had to go through this.

First off.. like to say how encouraging it is to hear all these stories. I am 24, just had my first baby 11 months ago. Have been having dull to sharp pains in my lower left abdomen. Up til now all my docs have ben putting it off, saying the pain is from having had a c section. Going to get an ultrasound tomorrow though to try and rule out the possibility of cyst (which most def run in the family). Just wandering if anyone had tips on how to handle having surgery on cyst when in your childbearing years. How serious/not serious is it to have ovarian cysts? Thanks!

I had a grapefruit sized cyst removed when I was 19. The surgery was remarkably easy, a laparoscopy. Camera in the belly button, two incisions to either side, and one at the top of the pubic area, all about 1.5" long. The pain was very manageable. I took the prescribed percoset for two or three days, and switched to Ibuprofen after that. It's outpatient. You rest for a couple of days and then you're back to it. Light activity of course, no running around, jumping, anything that will tear anything. They drain the cyst and then pull it out through the small incisions.

I did it on my own with no parents (I was several states away in college at the time and I went in for an appointment to see about pain and then two days later was scheduled for surgery) and it wasn't a problem at all. I honestly wouldn't worry about it...the worst part is the bill!

don't worry. i'm 16 years old and i'm in the middle of another possible ovarian cyst since mothersday of this year. it started yesturday around noonish and i'm still feeling twitches. it ruptured faster last time, maybe only a few hours. i might end up going in to the docter again to see for sure that nothing is going wrong. i'm a little scared too, but don't worry. i hope you feel better soon.

Don't be terrified. My 8 year old daughter recently had a cyst about the size of a softball removed. The surgeon reassured me that it more common than I relized for young girls and women to develop cysts. She had laser surgery to remove it and went home the next day. She had no discomfort after the surgery. Due to the size of her cyst, she actually felt better after her surgery than she had for months before.

I'm seventeen years old and last week i was at the mall and had severe lower abdominal pain so i thought i had to go to the bathroom or something but i ended up on the bathroom floor and i couldn't even move or anything. my friend who was with me had to almost break the door to help me out, because i couldn't even get up to open the stall. i called my mom and so she got there. i took some iboprofen and nothing was working so when my mom got there they had to carry me out and they had to take me out in a wheelchair. it had been like 45 minutes and it was just getting worse so i went to the hospital and sure enough. An hemorrhagic ovarian cyst. that was on wednesday and it still hurts. i can't do anything. i'm on painkillers but can't take them during the day. i'm in college and i had to get a wheelchair to get me through the day. it's so horrible. i just want this gone. i've had a fever and my period is a week late (i'm not pregnant) but i barely know about this. help??

Oddly Ive had a lot of the same symptoms, and I just found out I have a cyst in my right ovary a littel larger than a golf ball. Ive been running a fever, but my OBGYN said it wouldnt be because of the cyst! Weird, as im hearing and learning more about this. The pain is getting very bad and i have this steady pain in my groin, almost like a hernia :( And they wont give me any painkillers!!

I found out 2 months ago I had cysts. I have at least one large one on my right ovary. They have taken 2 ultrasounds and it is getting bigger. I also don't have regular periods about every 3 months.

They don't hurt, I didn't know I had any cysts until the ultrasound. Now they want me to go into surgery and have them removed as they are getting bigger. The surgery makes me nervous, even though it is a day surgery.

Just an FYI I have no other symptoms except the for being tired which is more likely because I don't sleep at night very restfully.

I just wanted to offer you a bit of reassurance about the laproscopic surgery - i had a tubal ligation in July, and my recover was remarkably fast. Within a week I was back doing back flips on our trampoline with my kid (my doctor was less than enthused!). In the process of having the tubal, the found a cyst on my right ovary that is causing concern, so now I'm waiting on the return of the CA125 blood tests to see what the next step will be (probably another surgery.) Good luck to you...I'm sure you'll be fine! :)

I have been experiencing left groin pain, down the leg to about the knee. A discomfort and sort of numbness with it. I describe the discomfort, like having bunched up denim digging into the groin area. I have made an appointment to see a doctor, but in case they don't find anything. Does someone have any ideas what other things maybe causing the discomfort. The pain came on after my most recent period, a day or two after the discomfort started. I have felt fatigue, feel hot (but temp is normal), experienced a migraine, no appetite at times, or the opposite at times. Restlessness in the leg, unable to sit for long periods of time, and unable to find a comfortable way to deal with it, other then ignore for the time being.
Any help would be great. thank you

Olive,
I recently had my uterus removed, but not the ovaries, but I feel sharp pains on the left lower part of the abdomen (where the left ovary is located). I have had this pain consistently for years (it became more acute whenever I had my period). I am experiencing the same symptoms that you are. I have had ct scans (showing the ovarian cyst on the left ovary) and it appears that it has grown larger. I'm considering removal of both of the ovaries (I believe that I should have done it during the historectomy). Since you have a similar situation, I would like to correspond with you to exchange notes. Thank you.

I have put on at least 5 kilo's in 1-3 weeks. I weigh myself usually every week but thought i'd leave it for a while and was feeling heavy and my abdomen also is swollen and I get pain there and it radiates to both my sides and my lower back. I also get nausea and sometimes night sweats and I poo more than normal and pee alot. I haven't had a period for at least 2 months (I really don't care!!!) and have started getting reflux and racing heart. I also have a panic disorder so cannot differentiate between anything! I'm panicking because of this sudden weight gain...it's crazy and i've changed nothing in my diet. I don't know if it's anything to do with having had glandular fever either. I also don't want to over-react but I also don't want to continue gaining weight and end up looking like an overgrown elephant!!! PLEASE HELP!!! Sex is also painful and I don't know if it's anything to do with being abused throughout childhood and I have worked through this in 15yrs worth of therapy!!!
